A biotechnology corporation, Lumon Industries, uses a mindwipe medical procedure called "severance" to separate the consciousness of their employees between their lives at work and outside of it. Due to their increasingly divergent life experiences, the consciousnesses of the employees in the work place (dubbed "innies") gradually split from their consciousnesses outside of it (dubbed "outies"), to the point that they become distinct personalities with their own agendas. One severed employee, Mark (Adam Scott), gradually uncovers a web of conspiracy at Lumon, and the mysterious project the employees are unknowingly working on.

Severance pay is often granted to employees upon termination of employment. It is usually based on length of employment for which an employee is eligible upon termination. There is no requirement in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for severance pay. Severance pay is a matter of agreement between an employer and an employee (or the employee's representative). The Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) may be able to assist an employee who did not receive severance benefits under their employer-sponsored plan. Please contact EBSA if you have any questions.

When we get to meet Mark's "outie" self, we learn he's a deeply depressed man who eagerly agreed to the severance procedure after suffering a crushing loss; his grief has exhausted him, and he just wants to stop feeling it, even if just for eight hours a day. One of the first episode's finest, surest touches occurs as we follow "outie" Mark into a Lumon elevator, and observe the precise moment of his transition into "innie" Mark, during the descent to his sub-basement office space. There is a soft buzzing sound, the screen's aspect ratio widens, and the expression on his face subtly but chillingly alters from low-level despair into ... a perfect, blissful absence.

DOLA's severance tax revenue is credited to the Local Government Severance Tax Fund and distributed to local governments.7 Seventy percent is available for discretionary loans and grants to local governments socially or economically impacted by the mineral extraction industry. Local governments apply to DOLA for the loans and grants at three different times during the year. DOLA is assisted by a 12-member Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Advisory Committee in making funding decisions. The money must be used for the planning, construction, and maintenance of public facilities, and for the provision of public services. The remaining 30 percent of the money received each fiscal year is distributed directly to local governments by August 31 of the following fiscal year based on the geographic location of energy industry employees, mine and well permits, and overall mineral production. 041b061a72
